In Kuk Sool, when a student has reached the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt, s/he is said to have learned the basic disciplines of empty-hand, self defence technique. The student is then regarded as mentally, as well as physically, competent to learn the stricter disciplines involved in the training of the various weapons techniques of Kuk Sool.

Weapon training normally begins
with an introduction to the staff and sword and requires a high level of
focus, concentration and skill, to be learnt safely and correctly. Although
weapons training officially begins once a student has attained a 1st Degree
Black Belt, weapons orientation techniques begin at the coloured belt level.

Most of the weapons (Mugi) that are taught are of traditional origin such as the staff, sword, cane and fan, however, in a self defence situation, improvisation using an umbrella instead of a cane; a rolled up magazine instead of a short staff or a broom instead of a long staff, can be just as effective to subdue an attacker. |
By way of an introduction
to weapons, for coloured belt students, we have a Jool Bong or Rice Flail
training programme. This weapon has eagerly been learnt by a great many
students and has helped tremendously to increase a student's focus, concentration and speed skills, not to mention being great fun to learn! |
